Traffic fines - problems @ the airport?!

A question came in from Stefan:

Hey,

trying to sell my car at the moment, and gonna leave the country shortly....

Ive got some traffic fines while travelling in Autralia. Do you know, if Ill have a problem at the airport, leaving the country, without paying them??
Is there a way to find out, how many fines I have and how to pay them???

Hi Stefan,

Several parts to this!

1. You should pay your fines ...

2. If you don't pay your fines, the case will go to the 'state debt recovery' system ...

3. Depending on how many fines you have, the state debt recovery system may hunt you down! Obviously for $60, they may not track you to the end of the earth ... but above a certain limit (I don't know what that limit is) they will figure it is worth some effort ... including 'possibly' notifying all ports and airports and blocking your exit!

4. The fines will be registered against the legal owner of the car/van/4x4 with the traffic authority that the car is registered with (NSW, QLD etc)... the fine will be against the person who has their name on the registration paper "unless" the driver was fined in person by a police officer, then of course the fine will go against the drivers name.

Bottom line ... pay your fines ... it is the right thing to do  Roll Eyes
