Question from Andrea via the 'contact us' form:

Dear Team,
I am wondering if you can help me with a question.
I want to sell my car with qld-numberplate. The rego is expired last week, but i don't mind to extend the rego.
But is it right that they still need to see a mechanic to get a new rwc in qld, if they buy the car and we want to change the owner+address of the car?
What are the risks if we leave my name and address (it's just a hosteladdress)?

Do you know is there another solution?
Is it right that SA is a good state to register?

I would appreciate your help! I can't find another good source for information!
Thank you so much in advance!
Andrea

Hi Andrea,

Well ... you have some tough choices to make.

If I am correct, you are trying to sell a QLD registered car in VIC with expired QLD registration ... you also want to drive to South Australia ...

1. As the rego is expired, the car should not even be parked on the street, especially not driven.

2. The only place you can drive it (legally), is to an inspection station if you make an appointment.

3. VIC is not that backpacker friendly ... unless you are selling to a backpacker who is driving back to VIC, they will have problems selling the car in other states (see forum).

4. SA is much more backpacker friendly, but you are not there!

So your choices are:

a) register the car in VIC (this will require an inspection, insurance, new number plates and transfer tax)

b) sell the car unregistered

c) transport the car to another state (e.g. SA)

d) scrap the car

Of these, if it was me, I would work out the cost for option a, I expect this will be ~$1,000 ... or drop the price and take option b and let the buyer register the car.

Don't let the inspection station rip you off ... if they claim the car needs too many repairs, get a 2nd or 3rd opinion. (2nd opinion = you will need to pay a 2nd inspection fee of course)
There are two RWC centres in the recommended mechanics section you might like to try?

If you register the car in VIC, you can not sell it in SA (or anywhere else) unless you give the seller a RWC of less than 14 days old ... so this is very backpacker unfriendly ...

One other thing to try ... CALL the QLD registration office, ask them for a 14 day extension (they may give it to you, NSW will do this) and get your tail over to South Australia immediately ...

If you can not get an extension, you need to sell the car where you are, buy another one or rent for the last part of your trip.

Sorry this is not the greatest news ....

All the best with the sale, (and especially the extension( let me know if it works))

Cheers

Ivan
