Selling a VIC car in QLD
«

Hi,
my girlfriend and I bought a car privately in Melbourne after working there for 6 months. We have since driven up the coast and will reach Cairns in a few weeks. What do we need to do in order to sell the car in Cairns?
The rego expires in Jan but i assume as its a VIC rego that we can't transfer it to a buyer in QLD?
Is it worth advertising without rego? or is it best to get rwc and rego in QLD and then transfer that into the new buyers name?
will it just be easier to see what a dealer will give us?
we won't have a fixed address either, is this a problem?
thanks
Si

Hi Si,
Thanks for the post and apologies for the slower than normal reply ... we usually try to answer a question in 24 hours or less.
You can
not
sell a VIC car in QLD legally, unless you advertise and sell it with a QLD safety check.
The new buyer will then be able to register the car in their name in QLD.
Personally & in your situation, I would not register the car in QLD, give the buyer the legal choice to do so post sale ... and cost it out for them / help them.
Re permenent address, talk to your friendly hostel manager, it is generally okay to use the hostel address where you plan to spend 'most' time as the registration address ... always ask though
Re dealer ... always worth asking a couple of dealers, but expect rejections and low offers of a few hundred dollars ... better than nothing though!
Hope this helps,
Cheers
Ivan

Thanks for the reply Ivan,
I think we will take your advice and just get the safety cert and then advertise it without rego and factor that into the price.
Its a great car that has never let us down so it would be a shame not to sell it.
thanks again
