selling a SA registered car in NSW

I have a potential buyer for my car. Now is my car registered in SA and I would like to sell it in NSW. How can I transfer the car to the new owner? Do I have to do that in SA, or can it be done in NSW? Going back to SA is not an option. Or do I have to re-register the car in NSW? If that is the case, how much will that cost me?

Hi,
Okay, 1st great news you have found a buyer, especially in winter!
Now to close the deal and get everything correct and legal for you and the new owner
First, you can sell the car to whomever you please at any time anywhere ... BUT the buyer must go to South Australia to legally register the car within 14 days of buying it OR they must register the car in the state they are in.
For example in NSW, if the buyer does not plan to go to South Australia within 14 days, the buyer should register the car in NSW.
To do this, they will need to get a blue slip, a green slip and pay the yearly registration fee.
You can help them get a blue slip, or get it for them as part of your service as part of the sale
(I would do that!)
A blue slip is a safety inspection for cars entering NSW that intend to be registered here.
(good to have and know the car is safe)
Flash auto repairs (at time of writing) do a blue slip for $54.40
(ask for Peter and tell him we sent you please)

Once you have the blue slip, the buyer simply needs to buy the green slip (compulsory third party insurance) and then take all the paperwork to the RTA.
The green slip will cost between $500 to $1200 depending on the car (for 12 months) ... call around and get some quotes, prices can be double from one insurer to the next. You can also get 6 months for a little more than half price.
The registration fee is 3% of the purchase cost plus road tax ... you can choose six or twelve month options.
Not cheap ... but the yearly fees apply to all states and so does insurance.
Factor all this into the price.
A car with registration is worth MORE than a car without it ... obviously! So getting this done or helping the buyer to get this done, increases your car in value above others.
Hope this helps,
Cheers
Ivan

Just another question, if I and the buyer would fill out the forms for re-registration, does the buyer have to travel to SA, or can he/she send the forms to a SA registration office?
Obviously, keeping the car on SA-plates is a lot cheaper (and easier, if it works out)

If you go the SA government website on:
http://www.sa.gov.au/subject/Transport,%20travel%20and%20motoring/EzyReg
it says the following:
Transferring registration when buying or selling a vehicle
When selling a vehicle you need to complete the disposal notice on the current registration certificate and lodge it with the Registrar of Motor Vehicles at any Service SA customer service centre within 14 days of the sale. Both the buyer and seller should complete the form.
You could contact the SA government and check with them if you could email/mail the documents to them but it use to be that you had to be there in person.
