Selling a QLD car in VIC: Questions and possibilities!

Hey everyone!
I have a 96 Mitsubishi Magna worth $ 2000,- It is registered in Qld and the REGO last until Mid of January!
I will leave Qld in the middle of November and drive down to Melbourne! My plan is to sell my car in Melbourne around the 10th of December and leave Australia for NZ!
I know that there are complications selling and QLD-car in Melbourne, anyway I hope you can write me some possibilities and best-solutions!
Q1: Can I sell it to a traveller who is driving up to Queensland and registeres it here?
Q2: When I get a QLD safety certificate before my departure I will definetely go more then 2000ks, what then?
Q3: I think the car is not worth enough reregistering it in Victoria, so if I decide to sell it unregistered, what do I have to consider? What does the buyer have to do then?
Q4: What do I have to do anyway when selling a QLD car in VIC?
Q5: You have some recommendations where its best to sell it in Melbourne?
Maybe you have some other better solution?
Thanks for everything
Chevy

Hi Chevy,
Here are my answers, in-line:
Q1: Can I sell it to a traveller who is driving up to Queensland and registeres it here?
Not really ... because they would need to buy it with a valid QLD safety certificate and get there within two weeks.
If you had a valid QLD inspection/safety certificate, then the answer would be yes.
Q2: When I get a QLD safety certificate before my departure I will definetely go more then 2000ks, what then?
You will need to get a new one!
Q3: I think the car is not worth enough reregistering it in Victoria, so if I decide to sell it unregistered, what do I have to consider? What does the buyer have to do then?
Do not de-register the car as it will not be legal to stand on the street or test drive.
2nd part of the answer is Q4
Q4: What do I have to do anyway when selling a QLD car in VIC?
You should 'advertise' it as registered in QLD, but help the buyer to legally buy it in VIC.
All that really needs to happen is the car needs a safety inspection ... I strongly suggest you get that 'before' you try and sell it ... 1. It is the proper legal thing to do and 2. The buyer will obviously find the car a better proposition and 3. re-registration in VIC will be easier/legal!
Q5: You have some recommendations where its best to sell it in Melbourne?
Follow Q4 ... get a safety certificate in VIC and advertise it as QLD registered with a valid VIC safety certificate ... also advertise you will help the buyer to get 12 months rego ... all of a sudden your car is very attractive to a backpacker!
This process will cost you some $'s, but you will be legal and if you make more than you spend, then all is good?
Summer is also almost here, so more backpackers are coming ... less than normal because of the GFC and the exchange rate, but it is a good time to sell!

Hey Ivan!
thanks for your answer! so to clarify:
When Im selling it in VIC I cant do anything here in QLD. I just drive down there, get a safety certificate and advertise it as qld-registered with VIC safety certificate!
As soon as I have sold it, the next step will be deregistering it with the proper form and send plates and form back to qld!
thats it?
another question: if I drive to a dealer and he offers me for example 1000,- and tells me he takes care of everything this would be okay and possible?
last question: if I have any speeding fine or whatever still opened at selling-time! can I deregister it? and where do I get the notice? does the buyer gets any problems?
thanks for your help Ivan, this is an awesome website!!
Cheers

You do not need to send the plates to QLD.
Just fill out the transfer of ownership form from the QLD registration authority, (for most states it is on the back of the registration form) and send it to the address listed on the form. (QLD)
Make sure you post it yourself!
The new owner takes the QLD plates to the VIC registration office and collects replacement VIC plates in exchange.
another question: if I drive to a dealer and he offers me for example 1000,- and tells me he takes care of everything this would be okay and possible?
Yep - just make sure you complete and post the transfer of ownership form (yourself) so the QLD authority knows you have sold it.
Note: I doubt any dealer would pay you a $1000 for a backpacker car, unless it was on a pre-arranged buyback scheme ...
last question: if I have any speeding fine or whatever still opened at selling-time! can I deregister it? and where do I get the notice? does the buyer gets any problems?
The registered owner at the time of the offence must name the driver.
i.e. YOU must say who the driver was(if it was not you), or YOU will get the fine!
Traffic fines are usually sent to the registered address ... if you get too many ... they WILL hunt you down
!
I hope this helps!
Cheers

Hi,
So if I understand correctly, you plan to sell your QLD registered car in VIC.
This is okay and can be done, although Victoria is probably the least backpacker friendly state for cars!
You may be better off to register the car in NSW ... (my opinion)
or WA is the BEST for backpacker cars
... but as you are passing NSW to get to VIC, registering in NSW would be my suggestion
http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Registration/NewToVictoria/InterstateVehicleRegistration.htm
When in Victoria, call 13 11 71 (Vic roads) and have your credit card ready.
You will also need:
* the VIN and engine number of your vehicle
* your number plates
* your current licence number.
Another option is to sell the car unregistered ... also a pain as you can not park the car on the road.
HEY ... regardless of what you do, really you should advertise the car for sale NOW ... use our advertise form and select the month you plan to sell, then buyers can start to look at the car from overseas. This is a FREE service with BCC of course
Bottom line, VIC is a pain for YOU and a pain for whoever buys the car UNLESS they plan to sell it in VIC ... and even then it is a pain as they will need to get a safety certificate of their own when they advertise it for sale.
We wish you safe travels and good luck with the sale!
Cheers
Ivan

I appreciate your quick answer and your tips thanks a lot!!!
I just wanted to add something...
Because when i bought my van (in Cairns, qld) the seller had to give me a RWC as required by Queensland landtransport. I will have to extend my rego in april for 6 or 12 month probably when i will go down the east coast in brisbane. If I'm selling my car in NSW, VIC or SA (i want to finish my travel with the great ocean road) will I have to fill the paper form from the Queensland landtransport and have a RWC as well.... because i will be far away from Qld and it will be impossible for me. OR i will have to cancel my rego in QLD when i will sell it and register it in the state im in with all the certificat that it includes (NSW, VIC or SA)
Do you still think it will be easier to sell it in NSW (what will be the procedure? cancellation, inspection,.....)
What will happen with my QLD REGO that i just extended before leaving the state.
Thanks A LOT
Maybe you already answer those question in the previous post...I'm sorry i just want to make sure that i dont have a different case then someone else

Hi,
For both QLD and VIC you need a certificate of roadworthiness when you SELL the car.
This is so the new owner can be sure the car they are buying is safe to a basic standard.
NSW is different, In NSW each car needs an annual safety inspection, whether it is being offered for sale or not.
So the buyer knows the car was tested as safe sometime in the last 12 months.
When you sell a NSW car, you do not need a 'new' safety inspection to sell it, only a valid certificate of less than 12 months old.
Of course, it is always a good idea for buyers of NSW cars to get a safety inspection, but this is not a legal requirement!
For backpackers, the NSW system works better than QLD or VIC, because you are probably only keeping the car for about 3 months and probably travelling interstate.
If you have a QLD or VIC car and you are selling it outside of VIC or QLD, my advice is get the local safety inspection done when you decide to sell, then when you have sold the car, you can ask the buyer to cancel the registration and get the new registration in the state they are in.
There should be a refund of the balance of registration when you (or they) cancel and of course the new registration will cost some $'s.
It is a pain in the butt - but you can do it
If you can get NSW or WA rego, do it! Most of these problems disappear.
Note: The buyer of any NSW car must visit a NSW registration office within 14 days ... that is not the case with WA cars, which is why WA is the BEST for backpackers, NSW is 2nd best, QLD and VIC or worst IF you are selling out of state.
In my opinion, it is hard to sell a backpacker car anytime, anywhere outside of summer, because there are less backpackers!
The easiest place to sell a backpacker car is NSW, as there are more backpackers here at any one time ...
Outside of summer, set the price much lower, make the car look pretty, fix any faults and advertise!

you can sell your QLD car in any state
you need a qld transfer form and a RWD cert from any state as these are all accepted by Qld transport
the new buyer then needs to send form and transfer fee to Qldf transport and they can then reredgister the car when its due
my question is why would you want to go to victoria for anyway
its cold wet and ......victoria .......... LOL
if you have any questions feel free to ring me on 0438 718 303
i am sure i can assist you with the probs
