Insurance question
« on: June 01, 2009, 05:55:52 PM »

Hi,

I am new here, I just bought a car off an other backpacker and I want to now what kind of insurance I need/want.

I have transfered the rego in my name but that's it, does this cover me for anything?

The previous owner had a a counter party insurance or something like that, does his insurance transfer to me? What does this insurance cover you for?

Any help on this topic is greatly appreciated!

cheers

Hi Frenchy,

Each state has slightly different rules, so if you write back and say where the car is registered, we can answer very specifically for you.

As an example, in NSW there is Compulsory Third Party Insurance, covering every legally registered car. This insurance is renewed each time the car is re-registered. This insurance is sometimes referred to as the CTP, or green slip.

If you buy a car with valid NSW registration, it has CTP inurance.

CTP ONLY covers the medical expenses of a person you may injure, it does not cover damage to property or other vehicles.

It is obviously wise to purchase insurance to cover accidental damage to property or vehicles ... if you are not used to driving an automatic, or driving on the left ... or are just plain unlucky, then Third Party Property insurance could save you a fortune.
It need not be expensive, generally you can pay for a year and have a refund for what cover you do not use, it can work out as little as $30 per month.

Call NRMA for a quote or try eCar, we have a banner on our front page you can click on.

Write back if you have more questions, we are here to help  Smiley

Cheers

Ivan

Hi Ivan,

Thanks for your quick reply, it was very useful!

So just to summarise:
I live in NSW and have had the rego transferred. The previous owner had a CTP insurance plan. Does this plan transfer to me? Do I have like an insurance number or something somewhere?

So if I want to cover property I need to get a other type of insurance. I'll have a look at e-car.

Thanks for your time and help!

Hi Frenchy,

Yes, as long as the car is legally registered in NSW, the car you buy is covered by CTP.
The RTA govern this and their system does not allow a car to be registered without a green slip. (CTP)

To check the car is legally registered, make sure you transfer the registration (ownership papers) to your name, which is a legal requirement anyway!
If you don't have the correct owner papers, then it will difficult for you to sell the car, so this is an important step in the buying process!

If you drive the registered car and injure someone, then the CTP covers that person, but not their car or property.

Think of it like a safety net to cover medical expenses only.

Note, the CTP does not cover you, so if you are hurt, then you are not covered ... if you run me over, I am!

Advice, get the additional property insurance, it is pretty cheap and it is better safe than sorry!

Cheers

Ivan

Hey Ivan,

Sorry for the late relpy.. I've had a look at ecar but can't manage to get a quote, I get the following error:

"Decline: Licence / Driver Age

Due to underwriting considerations we are unable to offer insurance based on the information provided.
Decline Code:60"

I'm 24 years old, I have a french drivers licence and I have had it for a year now. Is this the problem?

Thanks again for any help!

Hi Frenchy,

Here is the answer:

If you don't have an Australian drivers license, you need to be 25 years old to insure with eCar ...

We will look into some other options and post them for younger drivers ASAP.

Cheers

Ivan
