Hi,

I just bought a car in NSW via this forum with a WA registration. I sent the form to the department but I got a letter back that I have to proof my identity and give more details about the immobiliser. How can I make a "certified" copy of my passport and how can I check if my car has an immobiliser? They also want a WA garage address, can I give them just anyone or will they send me letters to there? Cause my registered address is a PO box in Sydney. Thank you so much for your help!

Hi Alex,

Good questions 

To make a certified copy of your passport (or any document) you need to make a photo copy, then take it to a Justice of the Peace. (also called a JP)

Most post offices have a JP, also many chemist shops have JP's.

All you usually need to do is ask them politely to witness that your copy is a true copy of the original, stamp it with their official stamp and sign and date it.

In regards to the immobiliser and garage address, this is the 1st time we have been asked this for WA, let me check and post an update (here) either tomorrow or Monday ...

Thanks for using HCC ... remember, you can advertise your car the moment you buy it ... i.e. if you are leaving in March from Darwin (as an example), advertise it now so backpackers arriving in March can plan to buy it.

thanks for the fast reply. Well they sent me a form which have have to sign to make sure I have an approved immobiliser or they will cancel my license. When I bought that car I just ignored that passage on the buyers sheet. Well it's a 94 Ford Falcon with Smartlock, I think thats an immobiliser. However this forum is great and I will post the car asap

we also just bought a WA registrated car (in NT) and my question is if we have to stay here until we have received the invoice from the Department by post? Will they send it to our hostel adress? Or would they also send the invoice by email so we could start travelling? And what documents do we need to send to them together with the "Notification of Change of Ownership"?

Hi Sveni,

1st I assume the car has an immobiliser ... which is almost certain as every WA car sold (or transferred) since 1999 has been required to have (in WA) by law!

So there are two steps:

1. Send the receipt for the car, the completed registration document (The notification of change of ownership form) and proof of your ID to the Western Australia Department of Transport.
If posting (as you are) make sure your ID is a certified copy (see above)

This will prompt them to send you an invoice.

2. Pay the invoice (you can do this buy phone or the Internet)

When you send the documents to them, be sure to list the details of the immobiliser. Also an address they can write to you in case you make an error.

Now I need to check what you put down as the garage address for you AND Alex, so I will call them tomorrow (Monday) and post an update here in this thread.

Hope that is soon enough.

Re post of documents, if it was me, I certainly would want to have the document in my hand, so you can show it to the next buyer of your car ... I will check this how they send this to you when I call the department tomorrow ...

Yes, our van has an immobiliser. Should I also send a copy of the immobiliser invoice to the department?

OK - I got hold of them, here is the story:

1. You can put the residential address down as a Youth Hostel address in Western Australia.
The residential address is the address where the car is recorded as being garaged in WA. (Garage address)

2. You can also fill in a totally different postal address, this can be in any Australian state or territory.

So, whatever you put down as the postal address, this is where the paperwork (registration documents and invoice etc) will come to.
(You can get a very easy to use address by using Mail4ward (http://holidaycarclub.com/discounts_au.html))

A clarification on the ID, you will need to send two forms of ID certified as true copies of the original. (see above)
One form of ID should be the front and back photocopy of your Passport, the second should be a photocopy of your credit card.

If you have a receipt for your immobiliser, send in a copy, otherwise fill in as many details as you can about the system. (make and model)

When you post the forms, post them using registered post. (keep a copy of the registered post number)

You can call them on 13 11 56  (WA and interstate callers) ... but be prepared that they may keep you on hold in their system, so calling from a mobile may be expensive!

I have also called them yesterday and the very helpful lady told me that
1.   It is not necessary that I stay here in Darwin in the hostel to wait fort he invoice. If it’s ok for me to not have the invoice in paper, I can go on travelling and call them in about 2 weeks to ask them fort he tax amount and pay it by phone or Internet. Nevertheless they will send the invoice to the hostel address I put down in the form. I have put down my address of the hostel I am presently staying, not a Western Australia address
2.   She told me to send them
a.   The form fort he Transfer oft he Ownership
b.   A certified copy of my passport and
c.   A certified copy of my international driver’s license
I could get thes copies from the post office. She didn’t tell me about the credit card but maybe it’s just any 2 IDs they need. Since my van already has got an immobiliser, they don’t need a copy oft he invoice. I just have to tick this in the form. Also, I have kept a copy of the Registration form in case the original gets lost.

could someone please confirm, I'll be in australia next year mostly QLD and NSW. If I buy a car with WA registration, i can register it with a garage address in WA (eg just get a hostel address from internet) and give them my postal address in QLD (my aunts house) with no trouble? And is there any other state registration I can do that? Thanks
