Thanks Lucas, HCC will get bigger and better as we add more content ... thanks for the question, which actually helps build the content!

1st, to be 100% clear, HCC does not sell insurance, we do offer a hotlink to <a href="http://www.s2d6.com/x/?x=c&amp;z=s&amp;v=1555559&amp;k=holidaycarclub"  target="_blank">eCar, who we believe offer the best third party property insurance rates for travellers.

By <a href="http://www.s2d6.com/x/?x=c&amp;z=s&amp;v=1555559&amp;k=holidaycarclub"  target="_blank">clicking here, you will be able to get an on-line quote pretty quickly, however, if you are under 25 (which it sounds like you are) and you are NOT Australian, then you will struggle to find third party property insurance even with <a href="http://www.s2d6.com/x/?x=c&amp;z=s&amp;v=1555559&amp;k=holidaycarclub"  target="_blank">eCar ... sorry.

Note: Australia is a little different to England in regard to insurance and each Australian state is a little different too!
I will base my answer on NSW rules as that is where HCC is based and I have a NSW car myself ;-)

1. In Australia when a car is registered (specifically in NSW), third party insurance (also called the green slip) is mandatory and the insurance is linked to the car.
So if you sell the car, the third party insurance remains valid as long as the car is registered. The new owner is covered by the balance of the green slip.

This ensures that all NSW registered cars have 'basic' third party insurance, protecting innocent people and making life a little easier for the police, as they only need to check the car is registered to know the car car has minimum legal insurance.

2. Registration transfer is different than registration.
What I mean by this, is that when you buy a car, you transfer the remainder of the registration into your name, you then are covered by the original green slip while the remainder of the registration is active.

So in other words, if you buy a car with 12 months NSW rego, you will have 12 months 'basic' third party insurance, regardless of how old you are, as long as you have a valid drivers license and have legally completed the transfer process with the roads and traffic authority (the RTA).

If the registration expires, the owner (you) will then need to buy a new green slip (third party insurance) to re-register the vehicle.
At that point, your age and address are re-assessed.
Green slips are expensive for young people and also vary in price according to your home post code.

You can get a quote for a green slip (and more detail) here : www.greenslips.com.au

If you buy a NSW car with valid registration, you will get third party insurance included.
This is one reason why cars get cheaper as the registration expiry approaches! Registration can be expensive depending on who or where you are!

IMPORTANT:
Third party insurance (the green slip) will not cover you, or any property you damage. It will only cover injury to other humans (not including you!) ... SO, it is always recommended to get @ minimum third party property insurance and check the policy to see what and who is covered!
That way, if you bump into a Mercedes on the way up the coast, you will not be spending the rest of your life paying for it to be re-painted!
Same story for property, if you press the accelerator instead of the break and wipe out a shop front (it has happened!), the green slip will not help you in one bit ... you will wish you bought the extra insurance!

Many companies (including <a href="http://www.s2d6.com/x/?x=c&amp;z=s&amp;v=1555559&amp;k=holidaycarclub"  target="_blank">eCar) will sell you a yearly policy, but allow you to get a refund for the remainder of the property insurance you do not use, typically broken into months.

So while a policy may seem expensive, when you do the figures based on monthly, it is really not that bad.

Other insurance companies to get quotes from are AAMI, GIO and NRMA ... however finding a company that will accept overseas licenses is hard, that is why we think <a href="http://www.s2d6.com/x/?x=c&amp;z=s&amp;v=1555559&amp;k=holidaycarclub"  target="_blank">eCar is a good choice.

I hope this helps, if you get a quote, please drop back and share with others for their research and interest :-)

Hi mate, firstly, big thanks for all the info, really helped me out.

I started a fictional quote for a land rover defender 1993 (2.5l) ((nice and british Grin))

Quoted me for just third party $625. Is third party just the same as a REGO? or is it the same as the UK, and covers anything I damage apart from my own car. So it covers other peoples car/houses etc.

Fire and theft is like 3k!? so....no thanks. but then again a 2.5ltr landy is a million miles away from my 1.2 polo here in the UK. heh.

thanks again mate.

Hi Lucas,

Third party property is one important step up from the basic insurance covered by NSW rego! (the green slip)

Rego (green slip) provides cover only for the personal injury to the person you injure.

Third party property insurance (what you where quoted I assume from <a href="http://www.s2d6.com/x/?x=c&amp;z=s&amp;v=1555559&amp;k=holidaycarclub"  target="_blank">eCar?)
covers the other persons car, property and other items ...

$625 divided by 12 gives you cover for $52 a month ... sounds pretty cheap to me!

Agree, fire and theft sounds like more than the cost of the car?!

BTW - Defenders are quite rare on the backpacker circuit, much easier to find a Landcruiser or Pajero ;-)

All the best and good luck,

Ivan
