Buying a QLD car in NSW
«

Hi all,
I am thinking about buying a QLD car that I see here in NSW ... can you tell more about what I must do?
Anyone done this and can tell me what it really cost and how easy it is?
Thank you
Jon

Hi Jon - welcome to HCC.
Ok, here is what you need to do :
Make sure the old owner de-registers the car from QLD
1a. Before that, take the car to a garage and ask for a blue slip. (should be ~ $51 for a blue slip)
1b. If the car needs fixing for the blue slip, you will need to pay for those repairs.
ADVICE - ask the seller to get the blue slip. (or pink if it is a NSW car)
1c.
Get a quote for a green slip
... be prepared, these vary in price from $300 to $600+
Call around you should be able to get a deal, but being from overseas(assumption) you probably won't be too popular with insurance companies!!!
(hey - please write back with your experiences so others can share)
Get a physical green slip, not an electronic one as you will need documentation.
note - Web quotes are good, but not having a NSW driving license will count against you on the web.
2. Take the blue slip, green slip and a screwdriver to the RTA office WITH the original owner. (the seller)
At the RTA have the original owner take off the QLD registration plates and take your blue slip, green slip, QLD plates and QLD registration document to the counter.
3. Pay ~ $36.00 for a new set of NSW registration plates, registration document and sticker
4. Pay the NSW tax and charges !!
(tax is ~3% of the purchase price)
DONE - you will now have a NSW car with 12 months rego!
Budget for $1,000 and you will probably have change ... the blue slip repair costs are probably the biggest risk for you.
It should be noted that the difference in cost between a pink slip and blue slip is minimal (~$20) ... and the price of a set of NSW plates is low ~$36 ... so to be fair it is not much more expensive than anual re-registering a NSW car ... just 20 minutes more work.
If the car is okay, the green slip is your main yearly expense, regardless of where the car was registered before. (even NSW)
Any car with a long rego will save you money, but check out how to transfer the registration into your name, some states allow postal or Internet transfer, some require you to be in the state @ the registration office in person!
Feel free to comment ... and let us know how you go.
Cheers
Ivan

The blue slip is what you get from the garage (mechanic) ... it is a record of the safety check required to register your car here in NSW.
The green slip is the insurance document, you need to take the blue slip and the green slip + the registration papers to the RTA office when registering your car here.

The blue slip will be valid for 28 days ... after that you will need another test

But if you just wanted to sell the car to a traveller that would drive to Qld to register in their name, what about the safety slip(Qld)? How can u get that done if your in NSW
Or can the buyer do it in Qld?
