Why a wagon and not a van?
Cheaper than a van
Better on fuel than a van
Less likely to get broken into than a van
Faster than a van

We bought this wagon and converted the back for travelling. The back has false floor with lots of storage underneath and a double bed on top. We have driven the wagon from Sydney to Cairns and back with no problems. We have lived out of this wagon for the last month and would happily do another 5 if we werent returning home!
We bought the car from a dealer who gave it a full mechanical check, service and installed a brand new battery. We are the first back packers to own the wagon. Rego till March which covers you 3rd party for insurance. All you need to do is register the car which will cost around $99.

Good Points
Rego till March
Great tyre tread
Tow bar & electrics
Roof racks
Double bed in the back
Loads of storage under bed (can fit 2 66 surf boards plus all luggage)
Air con
Cruise control (a must for long driving!)
Electric windows and mirrors
Added extras (bedding, pillows, linen, water container, cooker & gas, fly nets etc.)
Bad Points
Fuel gauge is temperamental (but fuel light works fine and it hasn't been an issue for us)
Air con gas needs refilling (around $60 but havent had time to do it, we went without!)
