We got a Ford Fairmont EL '97 in perfect condition. It's powerful (4.0i L engine) and together with its power-steering, automatic transmission, cruise-control and the possibility to sleep in the back this wagon is the best choice as a backpacker!
We have been driving almost 10.000 km with it, and we haven't come across any problems what so ever. The vehicle is bought from a dealer and is formerly been used for rental. It has been serviced regularly.
